Their Stories

James Wong, 29
“It was truly inspiring working hard alongside the team and volunteers, learning the value of team work, unity and perseverance. The climb proved to others and myself that we can achieve beyond what we can imagine.”

James, a bone cancer survivor, was among 10 clients with special needs who challenged Mt Fuji in the first-ever YMCA Inclusive Climb in 2019. They underwent intensive physical training, completing a 57-storey vertical marathon in the process. The climb was an extraordinary journey of self-discovery; building resilience, confidence and independence through achieving something they had not thought was possible.
YMCA Community Service Programmes
Banu Nur Wahdini, 17
“With constant encouragement from the chefs, social worker, my aunt and grandmother, I am happy to be able to complete the course successfully and glad to know that I am finally good at something!”

Banu was raised single-handedly by her grandmother after her parents’ incarceration. She made friends who encouraged a “rebellious” lifestyle that neglected her academic pursuits. When she returned to school, the age difference with her peers discouraged her from continuing her studies. She completed the baking course at YMCA Project Bridge’s Vocational and Soft Skills Programme (VaSSP), where she received support and counselling from social workers. Last year, she graduated as valedictorian to her cohort at the YMCA VaSSP Graduation Ceremony.
YMCA Project Bridge
Zanariyah Binte Mohamed Abzul, 38
“I like to work at YMCA and make guests happy! I made good friends. I do dancing, arts and crafts and volunteer work, too.”

With a mild intellectual disability, Zanariyah struggled to find long-term employment. Today, she performs her duties as a housekeeper at YMCA @ One Orchard with confidence. She also participates in other recreational activities at the YMCA which hones her communication and social skills. Having worked here for three years, she is now a mentor in the YMCA Hospitality Training Programme. The programme recruits and trains interns with special needs by pairing them with experienced special needs staff, building their confidence, self-esteem and employability.
